Compost Toilets and Orange- Colored Women

it's funny- as quickly as this warm weather has come upon us, i've observed orange-skinned middle-aged women popping up everywhere. it's like... "now that it's sunny out i have an excuse to look all orange." or something.

i've been feeling a little guilty for reveling in this delicious warm weather... i mean, it's becoming glaringly obvious that this freakish weather is a result of global warming. the weather reporters almost sounded PROUD to announce the broken records of today's temps! scary.
nevertheless, i have so missed that warmth of sunshine on my skin and that sweet smell of thawing, awakening earth. i've spent the past couple days building a compost bin in our backyard and biking around the city with my good friends. this gives me hope and energy.

speaking of compost, the other day erik and luke matson and i were talking about how there was a compost toilet outside at the anarchism conference i went to last summer and how it was made out of really beautiful wood and even had a little crescent moon carved in the door. then the question came up of the origin of that ever present little moon on outhouses. so i did a bit of research and here we have it ..

"The moon that is often found on the outhouse door stand for the ancient sign- luna- or womanhood. When the outhouse was first invented people needed these signs to discern which was the men's or women's bathroom-for most people couldn't read. Soon, however, the men's became rundown or was very unkempt and not maintained. So everybody just used the women's bathroom, and the mens sunburst or sol sign was forgotten. The moon sign was kept and is also used as a vent."
